Government Statement On The Provision Of Additional Written Information To The COI

On Friday October 1 the Government provided a further quantity of documents to the Commission of Inquiry – around a thousand pages.  Their discovery was the result of continuing intensive efforts by the public service of the Virgin Islands to find any and all evidence which might be helpful to the Commission in its work.

Parliamentary Counsel

Role Summary

The role of Crown Counsel provides legal advice and assist with cases in order to maintain the integrity of the legal system in a professional manner. 

Main Responsibilities

1. Serve as Counsel in the Courts and assist Senior Officers during trials in order to maintain the activities of the Court.

Principal Crown Counsel

Role Summary

The role of Principal Crown Counsel is to provide legal advice to ministries and departments, provide leadership in conducting litigation and assist the Attorney General and Solicitor General in the training of junior counsel to acquire litigation skills. 

Main Responsibilities

1. Ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the Department and the supervision of staff.

2. Serve as Lead Counsel in the Courts during trials in order to maintain the activities of the Court.

Assistant Parliamentary Counsel

Role Summary

The role of Assistant Parliamentary Counsel is to draft legislation and memoranda of understanding on bi-lateral matters and assist with rendering legal advice in a consistent, professional and timely manner.

Main Responsibilities

1. Draft primary and subsidiary legislations on the basis of drafting instructions from Government Ministries; vet imperial legislations and submit comments thereon in a timely and professional manner.

The Legal Profession Act, 2015 of the Virgin Islands Code of Ethics set out in Schedule 4 shall regulate the professional practice, etiquette, conduct and discipline of a legal practitioner.
