Minister for Natural Resources, Labour and Immigration Honourable Vincent Wheatley has issued a call for community and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to do their part to fight against the Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease (SCTLD).
Mister Speaker, I thank you for the opportunity to stand before you today and give a statement on Labour and Immigration matters. As you and the Members of this Honourable House will remember I made a statement on Sunday, 3rd May to the people of these beautiful Virgin Islands updating them on Labour and Immigration matters. Mister Speaker, today I wish to give supplemental information that will answer some burning questions coming out of that statement.
Mr. Speaker, the Caribbean Region is about to enter another hurricane season and I would encourage everyone to accelerate their preparations as we anticipate an active season. I certainly recognise the challenges that emerge in our preparations as we continue to grapple with the pandemic and its social and economic impacts. We must always remain vigilant and prepared.
Mister Speaker, I thank you for the opportunity to address this Honourable House with a very important issue in our environment which is critical for the protection of our Territory in more ways than one; that of the protection of our coral reefs.
The Virgin Islands consists of some 60 islands, cays and rocks that amount to an average land mass/area of 153 square kilometers. By contrast, the Virgin Islands has the rights and responsibilities to approximately over 84,000 square kilometers of ocean space. This amounts to approximately 550 times more ocean real estate than that of the land.
The Virgin Islands joins with many countries throughout the world in the observance of World Environment Day. Started in 1974, World Environment Day represents a call to action to conserve the natural, precious assets that comprise the animals, plants and other species which share this earth with humans.

I wish to briefly address erroneous, misleading and sensational statements made by the Leader of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition in response to the Phase 2 Economic Response Plan presented by Premier Hon. Andrew A. Fahie on Thursday, 28 May, 2020.
