The fast-moving and multifaceted subspecialty of Sports Imaging is the topic of discussion as the BVI Health Services Authority observes Radiology Week.

Radiologist, Dr. Aasha Flax-Miller said Radiology Week is observed annually worldwide and is seen as an opportunity to sensitise the community on the key role the medical discipline plays in medicine.  “We would like to remind people that we exist and that we are the corner stone to medicine,” Dr. Flax-Miller said.

Dr. Flax-Miller said this year’s focus is on Sport Imaging and the increasingly central role it plays in the prognosis of injuries sustained by both professional and amateur athletes.

The Radiologist explained, “To support this year’s theme, our activities all relate to educating our internal staff about what type of imaging we do and when we would carry out that imaging.  On Tuesday, we had an MRI Emergency Safety Lecture by Mr. Lemeal Clyne to educate our staff of best practices in emergency MRI situations. We also had a lecture by Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Shuaib.  The unit is having a bake sale today and on Friday, we will be hosting a quiz.”

Dr. Flax Miller said the aim is to have patients empowered as well. “If you have pain related to a sports injury, do not ignore it, as early treatment tends to be best. There are different types of imaging, and we do not want to expose patients to excessive radiation if it is not necessary,” Dr. Miller added.

The Radiology Department is located on the third floor of the new Peebles Hospital. Persons can contact the department at telephone number 284-852-7727 or via email at for information and scheduling of appointments.

BVI Health Services Authority is committed to delivering excellent, compassionate, client centered healthcare across the Territory.
