Director of Culture Dr. Katherine Smith said the Department of Culture is committed to the development of the creative industries and is urging visual artists to participate in two (2) upcoming workshops this weekend.

“This is a perfect opportunity for our visual artists to think about their practice and to develop their artists statements and portfolios,” Dr. Smith said.

The workshops will be staged with support from the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) and are geared towards: visual artists (inclusive of painters, sculptors, photographers, printmakers, and art teachers) as well art enthusiasts.

The sessions will be facilitated by visiting retired professor in African art, Dr. Henry John Drewal, from University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Dr. Drewal was born and raised in Brooklyn and Hempstead, New York.  He previously lived and worked in Nigeria for two years.  During this time, he apprenticed with a Yoruba sculptor which turned out to be a transformative experience that led him to interdisciplinary studies at Columbia University in African Art History and Culture.

He also served as Curator of African Art at the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Neuberger Museum, and the Chazen Museum of Art. His visit to the Territory will also see his participation in HLSCC’s Public Lecture Series.

The time, dates and venues are as follows:

  • Friday, March 4 from 3:30 p.m.-5:00 p.m. at the Department of Youth Affairs Conference Room.
  • Saturday March 5 from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 noon at the Student Support Services Conference Room.

Both conference rooms are located in the Ward’s Building in Road Town.

For further information, persons may contact the Department of Culture at 468-9907.  All Covid-19 safety protocols will be maintained and followed.
