The Premier will attend meetings in Beijing this week to promote the interests of the British Virgin Islands and has asked the Deputy Premier to stand in for high level political meetings in the UK.

The BVI Asia Trade Mission 2018 began its two-week tour of Asian cities on the evening of Sunday, June 3, when Dr. the Honourable D. Orlando Smith, OBE, Premier and Minister for Finance of the British Virgin Islands, along with members of the delegation met with a significant potential investor in the tourism sector.

Good afternoon members of the media. As you know, this forum provides an opportunity for me to update on matters of the Government. And, especially this afternoon, I’d like to inform you of my upcoming travel to Asia.
The House of Lords earlier today debated the validity of a House of Commons amendment to require public central registers of beneficial ownership in the Overseas Territories (OT) during their Consideration of Commons Amendments to the Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Bill.
The Premier of the British Virgin Islands (BVI), Dr. the Honourable D. Orlando Smith, OBE, and the Leader of the Opposition, Honourable Andrew Fahie, have called on the United Kingdom (UK) Government and Parliament to respect the Virgin Islands Constitution ahead of the House of Lords consideration of the Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Bill on May 21 and its provisions on public central registers of beneficial ownership in the Overseas Territories.

It is now just over a week since the UK Parliament accepted an amendment to impose public registers of beneficial ownership on the Virgin Islands and other Overseas Territories. My Government continues to consider this a top priority for the Territory and to actively evaluate the implications of that decision and explore all available options.
