BVI launches Consultation on the Rights of Access to Beneficial Ownership Register
The Government of the Virgin Islands has launched a public consultation on its proposed policy regarding access to the register of beneficial ownership. This initiative aims to enhance financial transparency while balancing privacy and combating illicit finance. Legislative changes, effective from January 2, 2025, have strengthened the BVI’s framework for collecting beneficial ownership information, now hosted on the VIRRGIN system. The consultation seeks input on what information should be accessible, who qualifies for access, and potential exemptions. Submissions can be made by February 28, 2025.

Echo Crowned Champions as Prison Basketball League Concludes at His Majesty’s Prison
The Prison Basketball League at His Majesty’s Prison concluded with Team Echo winning the championship. The initiative, run in partnership with the BVI Amateur Basketball Association, promotes rehabilitation through sports. Lecoy Hughes was named MVP and top rebounder, while Rudy Vanterpool scored the most points. Superintendent Jay Kendall and Health Minister Hon. Vincent O. Wheatley praised the league for fostering personal growth and teamwork. Sponsors Riteway and One Mart Supermarket supported the event, which marks a broader effort to reform and rehabilitate through structured, purpose-driven programmes.

Ministry Takes Enforcement Action Against Illegal Sand Mining
Deputy Premier and Minister for Environment, Honourable Julian Fraser, has warned against the rising sand mining activities at Long Bay, Beef Island, and other areas like Capoon’s Bay, highlighting the damage to beaches and restoration efforts. Sand mining is illegal under the Beach Protection Ordinance, 1985, with offenders facing fines, imprisonment, and forfeiture of equipment. The Ministry, supported by the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force, is increasing beach monitoring, installing educational signage, and has sought to temporarily close beach access at Little Mountain Estate to prevent further mining. The ministry urges the community to protect the environment for future generations and promote sustainable resource management.

THE CROWN LANDS ADVISORY BOARD SEEKS MEMBERS
The Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, and Climate Change is seeking applications for the Crown Lands Advisory Board under the Crown Lands Management Act, 2024. The board will consist of five representatives from Tortola, Anegada, Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke, and Salt Island, and four persons with expertise in law, construction, banking, real estate, or other relevant fields. The board will make recommendations to Cabinet regarding Crown Lands disposal, ensuring transparency, accountability, and consideration of cultural and historical aspects. Applicants must have a Bachelor's Degree, be trustworthy, and possess strong communication skills. Board members will serve a 3-year term, with eligibility for reappointment. The position offers stipend-based remuneration. Applications must be submitted by 15 March 2025 to Dr. Ronald Smith-Berkeley at menrcc@gov.vg. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
