The Department of Waste Management recently engaged students in an informative and interactive presentation focused on waste management in the Virgin Islands and the critical role sanitation professionals play in protecting public health and the environment.
The session provided students with a greater understanding of the waste management system and the processes involved in maintaining clean and healthy communities. Students learned that effective waste management extends beyond simply collecting garbage and includes the collection, transportation, processing, recycling, and safe disposal of waste generated by homes, schools, businesses, and communities.
During the presentation, students were introduced to the role of Sanitation Officers and gained insight into the valuable services they provide each day. Discussions highlighted the importance of proper waste disposal, the dangers associated with littering and the impact that irresponsible waste practices can have on public health, the environment, and the overall quality of life.
Students also explored career opportunities within the field of waste management and environmental health, learning about the various professions that contribute to creating cleaner, safer, and more sustainable communities.
One of the highlights of the presentation was a live demonstration by Sanitation Officer Mr. Dexter Gabriel showcasing how a garbage truck operates and the process involved in collecting and transporting waste.
Director of Waste Management, Mr. Brian Davis said that that this hands-on experience allowed students to see firsthand the equipment, procedures, and teamwork required to effectively manage waste throughout the Territory.
βThe key message shared with students was that waste management is much more than collecting garbage. It is an essential public service that protects public health, preserves the environment, and supports sustainable development,β the Director said.
Students were encouraged to recognize the important contributions of Sanitation Officers, who serve as frontline public health professionals helping to ensure that people can live, work, and learn in safe and healthy environments.
The Department of Waste Management remains committed to enhancing the natural beauty of the Territory leveraging state-of-the-art waste management technology ensuring timely collection disposal and where feasible, recycling of waste.
