The Virgin Islands is observing Caribbean Mosquito Awareness Week from May 12–16 under the theme “Small Bite, Big Threat – Stop Disease Transmission, Start Source Reduction.” Residents are urged to eliminate standing water to prevent mosquito-borne diseases like dengue, chikungunya, and Zika. The Environmental Health Division emphasizes community involvement in mosquito control and will host educational activities, including an art and poetry competition and outreach events, to promote public awareness and action.

The Eslyn Henley Richiez Learning Centre, 81% complete, is a special education facility in the Virgin Islands. Set to finish by mid-2025, it will feature accessible classrooms, therapy rooms, and other amenities for students with special needs. It will serve about 30 students and is the first of its kind in the region.
The Virgin Islands is taking steps to boost its maritime safety standards, with the recent participation of Chief Marine Accident Investigator of the Marine Safety Investigation and Reporting Authority MSIRA, Mr. Jerome Padmore, in an international conference in Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA.
Six schools will compete in the Ministry of Education’s annual Inter-Secondary School Debates starting February 5. The participating schools are Bregado Flax Educational Centre, Cedar International School, Claudia Creque Educational Centre, Elmore Stoutt High School, St. George’s Secondary, and Virgin Islands School of Technical Studies. The debates aim to improve public speaking and argumentation skills. The winning teams from the preliminary rounds will advance to the semi-finals, with the final debate on March 12. The Eslyn Henley Richez Learning Centre (EHRLC) launched its first-ever Pen-Pal Day on May 21 at the Valerie O. Thomas Community Centre in Sea Cow’s Bay, in partnership with Francis Lettsome, Ebenezer Thomas, and Leonora Delville Primary Schools. The initiative aims to promote inclusion and foster lasting friendships among students, supporting their social, personal, and academic growth. Led by Ms. Elaine Malone-Lewis, the program began with students exchanging letters and culminated in an in-person event featuring pen-pal introductions, interactive games, team-building activities, and a shared lunch. The Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports remains committed to enhancing educational experiences and promoting student engagement across the Territory.
Improving employee health, wellness and productivity is at the centre of a new office renovation contract signed between the Recovery and Development Agency (RDA) and Vanterpool Construction to facilitate the relocation of the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change. The contract valued at $401,533.15 was awarded on Tuesday, 10 February, 2026, following a National (Domestic) Competitive Bidding process conducted in accordance with the RDA’s Procurement Policy and Procedures.
