The BVI Asia Abroad Scholarship Programme continues to expand its impact as it prepares to welcome its third cohort of scholars. On the 18th January, 2026, in a special ceremony, co-hosted by the Premier of the Virgin Islands and the BVI Hong Kong Office, three new students were formally announced as the newest recipients of this transformative academic experience.
This year, the BVI Hong Kong Office will provide support to three new scholars as they begin their academic journeys in Asia. Mr. Nicholas Laurac will pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Architectural Studies at the University of Saint Joseph in Macau. At the Macau University of Tourism, Ms. Zyra Creque will begin her studies in Culinary Arts, while Mr. Bernard Gordon will pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Tourism Business Management.
Ms. Siobhan Flax, Deputy Director of the BVI Hong Kong Office, welcomed both new and returning scholars, stating "It is with distinct pleasure that we welcome this new cohort of scholars, and equally rewarding to see our returning students continuing to thrive. It takes immense sacrifice, perseverance, and courage to leave home and pursue higher education abroad. I urge each student to remain focused, stay grounded, and represent themselves and the Virgin Islands with pride."
She also expressed deep gratitude to the programme’s Asian university partners:
"We are especially thankful to the universities that continue to offer our students access to world-class education through tuition-free scholarships and, in many cases, free housing. This is an extraordinary and life-changing opportunity that must never be taken for granted."
The BVI Asia Abroad Scholarship Programme currently partners with ten top-tier universities across Asia, offering fully or partially funded Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD programmes in a wide range of disciplines. There are presently 6 returning students enrolled in fields such as Psychology, Environmental Science, Accounting and Finance, Tourism Management, Architecture, and International Integrated Resort Management.
A core objective of the programme is to empower BVIslanders and Belongers with academic and professional expertise in key sectors, with the goal of having them return to the Virgin Islands to contribute to the Territory’s sustainable development.
