Starting July 1, the Government of the Virgin Islands will increase the minimum wage to $7.25 per hour, implementing the rise through a phased approach as recommended by the Minimum Wage Advisory Committee. This adjustment aims to help residents cope with rising living costs and promote economic stability. Employers must comply with the new wage rate, with penalties for violations up to $5,000. On World Obesity Day, March 4, 2025, Honourable Vincent Wheatley, Minister for Health and Social Development, highlighted the Virgin Islands' efforts to address obesity, emphasizing the theme "Changing Systems, Healthier Lives." Obesity remains a significant public health issue in the Territory, with contributing factors including poor diets, insufficient physical activity, and high alcohol consumption. The Ministry of Health and Social Development is working on several initiatives, including strengthening healthcare services, collaborating with PAHO on the HEARTS and HEARTS-D programmes, reducing trans fats and sugars in food, and promoting exercise through the BVI Moves initiative. Additionally, the Ministry is finalizing national nutritional guidelines in collaboration with other agencies. The Virgin Islands Deposit Insurance Corporation is seeking a highly qualified Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to provide strategic leadership and manage its operations. The ideal candidate should hold a Bachelor’s degree in Banking, Law, Finance, Accounting, Economics, Commerce, or Insurance (a Master’s preferred) and have at least 15 years of senior management experience in the financial sector, preferably with deposit insurance expertise. The CEO will be responsible for implementing Board policies, overseeing risk management and compliance, developing corporate strategies, promoting ethical practices, and representing the Corporation locally and internationally. Rymer led a multi‑agency BVI delegation that met with cruise‑industry leaders to reinforce existing ties and forge new partnerships. Emphasising sustainability and the Territory’s distinctive appeal, the team joined workshops on emerging trends and strategies, aiming to secure long‑term growth for the Virgin Islands’ cruise sector. Deputy BVI Ports Authority head Dean Fahie said the productive talks will spur mutual success for the Territory and its cruise partners, positioning the BVI for a greener, more competitive future in global cruising.
