Smith, OBE, addressed the RISA BVI & South Square Conference highlighting the Virgin Islands’ ongoing efforts to address its placement on the FATF grey list by strengthening anti-money laundering measures and regulatory frameworks, with a goal to be removed within two years. Six schools will compete in the Ministry of Education’s annual Inter-Secondary School Debates starting February 5. The participating schools are Bregado Flax Educational Centre, Cedar International School, Claudia Creque Educational Centre, Elmore Stoutt High School, St. George’s Secondary, and Virgin Islands School of Technical Studies. The debates aim to improve public speaking and argumentation skills. The winning teams from the preliminary rounds will advance to the semi-finals, with the final debate on March 12. Lucas Anton Findlay of Joyce Samuel Primary School emerged as the winner of the 2025 Inter-Primary School National Spelling Bee, with Dominique Ashley of Valley Day Primary placing second and Layla Saniana of Ebenezer Primary coming in third. Competing individually, students studied 3,000 words in preparation for the event, which began on May 28 and concluded with the finals on June 4 after twelve schools advanced. Deputy Chief Education Officer Mrs. Heida Selwood emphasized the competition’s role in strengthening students’ spelling and literacy skills while promoting friendly academic rivalry across the Territory. The Ministry of Education continues to support such initiatives to enhance educational development throughout the Virgin Islands.
