The Virgin Islands will implement the OECD’s updated Common Reporting Standard (CRS 2.0) effective 1st January 2026, requiring Financial Institutions to collect new data throughout 2026 and submit it to the International Tax Authority by May 2027. Key changes include expanded definitions to cover digital products, crypto-assets, and Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs), enhanced due diligence procedures, and clarified reporting requirements. These updates align with the Mutual Legal Assistance (Tax Matters) Act, Revised Edition 2020. The Virgin Islands has also committed to adopting the Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework (CARF) by 2028.

The Government of the Virgin Islands, through the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports, is inviting tenders for the connection of two (2) 5000-Gallon Water Tanks at the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS). The works will enhance the school’s water infrastructure through the installation of an automatic fill system, interconnection of tanks, and integration of pump systems for consistent water supply.

On May 13, 2025, the Government of the Virgin Islands signed a $224,639.60 contract with Alvair Limited for consultancy services related to the engineering design and construction management of water mains and civil works for the Farmers’ Reservoir at Paraquita Bay. This 30-month project, led by the Virgin Islands Recovery and Development Agency (RDA) and funded by the Government with the Premier’s Office as Ministry Partner, aims to address the long-standing water access issues affecting local farmers and enhance food security in the Territory. Premier Dr. Natalio Wheatley emphasized the importance of moving from discussion to action to support agricultural productivity. RDA CEO Anthony McMaster highlighted the project’s economic and strategic value, encouraging local engagement as the initiative progresses.

I am pleased to join you for this very important Private-Public Sector Disaster Management Workshop, and I extend warm greetings on behalf of the Government and people of the Virgin Islands to all of you who are visiting with us. Six schools will compete in the Ministry of Education’s annual Inter-Secondary School Debates starting February 5. The participating schools are Bregado Flax Educational Centre, Cedar International School, Claudia Creque Educational Centre, Elmore Stoutt High School, St. George’s Secondary, and Virgin Islands School of Technical Studies. The debates aim to improve public speaking and argumentation skills. The winning teams from the preliminary rounds will advance to the semi-finals, with the final debate on March 12. The British Virgin Islands Tourist Board & Film Commission has announced the inaugural 284 Excellence Film Festival (284XFF), set for October 30 to November 2, 2025, aiming to bridge Caribbean literature and cinema. With the theme “Caribbean Literature in Motion: Caribbean Stories Reimagined,” the festival will showcase global films while spotlighting Caribbean narratives adapted for the screen. Featuring national, regional, and international competitions, as well as student and youth challenges, the event fosters creative collaboration and cultural exchange. Supported by major international film festivals and hosted in the BVI, 284XFF positions the Territory as a cinematic hub while empowering local and regional talent.

On June 4, 2025, the Office of the Deputy Governor issued a statement addressing false claims suggesting that Deputy Governor David D. Archer, Jr. denied public officers their constitutional rights to freedom of expression and assembly, as protected under Sections 23 and 24 of the Virgin Islands Constitution Order, 2007. The statement clarified that on May 30, 2025, the Deputy Governor received and acted on a request from His Excellency the Governor, Mr. Daniel Pruce, to share correspondence related to a peaceful demonstration with Senior Managers, enabling them to guide staff appropriately. The Deputy Governor also provided instructions on how officers could attend the march while ensuring continued delivery of public services, in accordance with established Public Service policies. The statement reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upholding individual rights and highlighted ongoing efforts to establish a Human Rights Commission.
