The Social Development Department hosted a Seniors’ Cultural Soirée on May 10th to celebrate Senior Citizens’ Month 2025, bringing together local seniors and visitors from the US Virgin Islands. Under the theme “Flip the Script on Aging,” the event showcased Virgin Islands heritage through food, music, and traditions, fostering cultural exchange and community spirit. Minister Vincent O. Wheatley praised the event for honoring elders’ contributions and reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to supporting seniors. The celebration promotes healthy aging, social inclusion, and continued community engagement throughout May.

Governor Daniel Pruce is inviting public feedback on the Commission of Inquiry (COI) reforms, which will be reported to UK Overseas Territories Minister Stephen Doughty MP to guide future decisions. A public survey and dedicated mailbox have been set up for this purpose, with a deadline of March 2nd. Governor Pruce encouraged the public to share their views and experiences. The survey is brief, and general comments can be emailed to bvicoi@fcdo.gov.uk. All feedback will be treated anonymously and sensitively.

Minister for Education, Youth Affairs and Sports, Honourable Sharie de Castro, announced that her ministry is reviewing the Education Act to address violence in schools. She emphasized the importance of strengthening the act to provide necessary support for education in the Territory. The ministry is also using various disciplinary measures to ensure students continue their education while receiving support inside and outside school hours. Chief Education Officer Mrs. Orlandette Crabbe discussed the ministry’s "wrap-around approach," providing resources to students and their families to address behavioral issues. She stressed the commitment to ensuring a safe learning environment for all students. Inspector Rudolph Bobb from the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force highlighted the increased police presence in schools and random student searches to prevent misconduct. He encouraged parents and students to seek assistance from the Family and Juvenile Unit to prevent serious legal consequences.
