Immigration Detention Centre. Funded through a $100 million loan facility with CIBC and led by the Virgin Islands Recovery and Development Agency (RDA) in partnership with the Ministry of Financial Services, the project aims to strengthen national security while upholding human rights standards. The modern facility will provide secure, humane accommodations for detainees and include medical, recreational, and operational spaces. The Government of the Virgin Islands has reappointed Mr. Glenroy Forbes as Chairman of the Social Security Board (April 1, 2025 – March 31, 2027) and Mr. Wendell Gaskin as Representative of Employed Persons (April 15, 2025 – April 14, 2027). Mr. Forbes, a legal and financial expert with prior leadership roles including Financial Secretary and BVI Health Services Authority Chairman, returns with extensive experience. Mr. Gaskin, a retired public servant with over 30 years in finance and governance, also brings strong leadership credentials. Minister Vincent O. Wheatley praised their appointments, emphasizing their importance in strengthening the Board’s oversight and safeguarding the financial security of the Virgin Islands’ people.
Two bids were received by the Recovery and Development Agency (RDA) for the West End Ferry Terminal Project by the extended deadline of January 17, 2025. One bid was from a joint venture of two local firms, and the other from a Canadian firm. The technical submissions will be evaluated by the project’s design consultant, Inros Lackner SE, with results expected by February 2025. The project is funded by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) and aims to improve infrastructure and enhance connectivity. The West End Ferry Terminal is crucial for sea travel to and from Tortola, Jost Van Dyke, and the USVI.
The Department of Waste Management is accepting quotations for 100 heavy-duty 360-litre residential wheeled trashcans and 30 heavy-duty 1100-litre wheeled dumpsters. The bins must be made from high-density polyethylene, resistant to chemicals, heat, UV rays, and extreme temperatures, and meet specific standards (DIN EN 840 and RAL GZ 951/1). The 1100-litre dumpsters must be compatible with DIN lifting devices, feature reinforced lifting trunnions, and have a 2-inch water drain with a locking plug.
