Mr. Jerome Padmore has been appointed Chief Marine Accident and Safety Officer within the Premier’s Office, responsible for Maritime and Shipping Administration. With over 17 years of law enforcement experience and expertise in marine safety and accident investigation, Mr. Padmore will oversee marine accident investigations, safety procedures, and collaborate with stakeholders to improve maritime safety. His appointment will help address long-standing maritime compliance issues. He holds certifications in Marine Safety Accident Investigation and is pursuing post-graduate certification in Accident Investigation. The government remains committed to improving maritime safety in the Virgin Islands.

The Ministry of Communication and Works has approved the implementation of a Demerit Point System for drivers of taxi and livery motor vehicles. The approval was granted pursuant to Regulations 8(1) and 8(3) of the Road Traffic (Taxi and Livery Commission) Regulations, 1997, as amended and authorises the Commission to enforce the Demerit Point System with immediate effect.

Two bids were received by the Recovery and Development Agency (RDA) for the West End Ferry Terminal Project by the extended deadline of January 17, 2025. One bid was from a joint venture of two local firms, and the other from a Canadian firm. The technical submissions will be evaluated by the project’s design consultant, Inros Lackner SE, with results expected by February 2025. The project is funded by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) and aims to improve infrastructure and enhance connectivity. The West End Ferry Terminal is crucial for sea travel to and from Tortola, Jost Van Dyke, and the USVI.

The Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change, in collaboration with H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC), CERMES, and Spatial Innovision Ltd, conducted training sessions to improve the skills of environmental and technical officers in water quality monitoring, data analysis, and storage. Around 21 officers from various departments participated in nine ArcGIS courses from November 2023 to October 2024. The training focused on geographical data collection, GIS analysis, and water quality data management. A five-day workshop in September 2024 further enhanced skills in assessing, testing, and interpreting water quality data. The RESEMBID project, supported by the European Union and Expertise France, aims to strengthen the Virgin Islands' water quality monitoring program to improve environmental management and spatial planning.
