The Government of the Virgin Islands is moving forward with discussions on the reform and modernisation of the Territory’s Constitution and will be meeting with residents on the sister islands next week.

Residents will meet with members of the Constitutional Negotiating Committee (CNC) and discuss the proposed amendments to the Virgin Islands Constitution Order 2007, field questions and share their views on the proposed amendments ahead of upcoming negotiations. The first session will be held on Tuesday, 26 May at the Catholic Community Centre on Virgin Gorda from 5:30 p.m. 

Premier and Minister of Finance Honourable Dr. Natalio Whealty said the establishment of the CNC underscores the Government’s commitment to a transparent, inclusive, and forward-looking approach to constitutional advancement adding that a coordinated communication strategy will keep the public informed and engaged during the constitutional reform process. The Premier added that the committee represents a critical milestone in the Territory’s constitutional development.

The committee will also meet with residents on Jost Van Dyke at the Methodist Church on Thursday, 28 May at 10:30 a.m. and on Friday, 29 May at the Emile Dunlop Community Centre from 10:00 a.m.

Premier Wheatley in earlier remarks on the establishment of the Constitutional Negotiating Committee stated that the team will ensure that The Virgin Islands is properly represented in discussions with the United Kingdom as the Territory seeks to modernise its constitutional framework. “This process is essential to strengthening governance, enhancing self-determination, and securing a constitution that reflects the will and future of our people,” he said.
