Our Commitment to Serve
The National Council on Human and Social Development (COHSOD) is a statutory body established by the Government of the Virgin Islands. It serves as the primary advisory body on matters relating to human and social development, with a focus on improving the well-being of individuals and communities across the territory.
Key Responsibilities:
Policy Leadership
COHSOD defines the national policy framework for human and social development in the Virgin Islands. This includes establishing legal rights, strategic priorities, institutional arrangements, and mechanisms for monitoring, evaluation, and learning.
Social Inclusion and Protection
The Council shapes and advises on policies that promote social inclusion and protection, ensuring that all residents, especially vulnerable and marginalised groups, have equitable access to opportunities and services across sectors such as social welfare, health, education, employment, housing, and justice.
Integrated Health and Education Strategies
COHSOD promotes the improvement public health outcomes by promoting universal access to quality health services and supporting the integration of health considerations into all areas of policymaking. It also advocates for inclusive, quality education and lifelong learning as a foundation for social and economic development.
Child, Disability, and Gender Advocacy
The Council coordinates national efforts to safeguard the rights of children, persons with disabilities, and older persons through appropriate legislative frameworks, inclusive programmes, and services that enable their full participation in society. It also promotes gender equality and the protection of all human rights.
Labour and Economic Security
COHSOD supports the development of fair and inclusive labour market policies, social insurance programmes, and systems that protect workers' rights, provide economic safeguards, and foster positive industrial relations.
Stakeholder Coordination
COHSOD collaborates with stakeholder organisations and international partners to ensure a coordinated approach to human and social development in the Virgin Islands.
