His Majesty’s Prison (HMP), in partnership with the Association of Reef Keepers (ARK), has completed a rain and sensory garden at the Eslyn Henley Richez Learning Centre.

As part of the initiative, the HMP woodwork shop team constructed a sturdy wooden bench and a colourful signpost to enhance the therapeutic garden, creating a welcoming and stimulating environment for students, parents, and teachers. ARK provided the materials, while HMP supplied skilled labour and workshop facilities.

This collaboration showcases how meaningful partnerships can reduce costs while allowing inmates to contribute positively to the wider community. The project was completed on schedule and highlights opportunities for other schools, non-profits, or charitable groups to partner with the prison.

Superintendent of Prison Mr. Jay Kendall said, “This project reflects the heart of our rehabilitation efforts at His Majesty’s Prison. By putting their skills to work in service of the community, inmates not only give back but also gain valuable experience, pride, and a renewed sense of responsibility.”

The Superintendent added, “Projects like the sensory garden enhance public spaces while supporting our commitment to rehabilitation, skill-building, and positive community engagement. If materials are provided, His Majesty’s Prison is ready to supply skilled labour to help bring similar projects to life, making a lasting difference in people’s lives”

HMP reaffirmed its commitment to rehabilitation, skills training, and positive community engagement, noting that projects such as the sensory garden benefit both the public and inmates. The Prison encourages community groups, schools, and non-profits to reach out with proposals where skilled craftsmanship and teamwork can be applied to bring lasting value.
