Statement
Organisation:
My fellow Virgin Islanders,
June 1st marks the official start of the Atlantic Hurricane Season, a time when we must all renew our commitment to preparedness, vigilance, and collective responsibility.
Forecasts indicate that this may be an active season, with the potential for several named storms and hurricanes. While we cannot predict the exact path or impact of any system, we do know that early preparation is our strongest defense against the effects of severe weather.
The Ministry of Communications and Works, in collaboration with the Public Works Department and other key agencies, has been taking proactive steps to safeguard our communities. Our teams will ensure that drains and ghuts are cleared, manage vegetation, inspect roads and infrastructure, and strengthen critical communication systems to ensure that accurate and timely information reaches the public.
We are also working closely with the Department of Disaster Management (DDM), the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC), and local telecom providers to enhance the resilience of our cellular broadcasting network. This collaboration is aimed at ensuring that emergency alerts and critical information can be delivered effectively during adverse weather conditions and other disaster events.
While the Government continues its work, preparedness begins at home. I urge every resident to take simple but essential steps today:
- Review your emergency and evacuation plans
- Restock disaster supply kits
- Secure your homes and surroundings
- Identify your nearest shelters and evacuation routes
- Stay informed through official Government communication channels
Let us also look out for one another, particularly the elderly and vulnerable, ensuring that no one is left unprepared.
Preparedness is not a one-time action, it is an ongoing commitment. By acting early and remaining informed, we strengthen not only our individual households but the resilience of our entire Territory.
As we enter this hurricane season, let us remain alert, proactive, and united in protecting our families, our communities, and our Virgin Islands.
Stay safe, stay prepared, and may God continue to bless and watch over these beautiful Virgin Islands.
