Organisation:
The Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports proudly announces the outstanding performance of Virgin Islands students in the 2025 Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations.
In June 2025, 412 candidates from across the Territory sat the CSEC examinations, reflecting steady growth in participation over the past three years. Among them were over 100 eleventh graders from public secondary schools, whose involvement highlights the continued success of the Ministry’s partnership with H. Lavity Stoutt Community College through the Dual Enrolment Initiative.
The results reveal several noteworthy achievements:
- The Virgin Islands secured a 100% pass rate in eight subjects, including Agricultural Science, Economics, French, Music, Principles of Accounts, Physical Education and Sport, Food, Nutrition and Health Technical, and Family and Resource Management Technical.
- In seven subjects, students achieved between 90–99% pass rates, including Biology, English A, Information Technology, Integrated Science, Office Administration, Principles of Business, and Visual Arts.
- An additional eight subjects recorded pass rates of 80–89%, among them Caribbean History, Chemistry, English B, Physics, Theatre Arts, EDPM, Human and Social Biology, and Technical Drawing.
English A continues to be a subject of excellence, with the Territory achieving a 97.63% pass rate in 2025—a 2.13% increase from 2024 and a 5% increase from 2023. For the third consecutive year, Virgin Islands students outperformed the regional average in English A, with 95 Grade I passes, 102 Grade II passes, and 50 Grade III passes.
In Mathematics, regarded as a challenge across the region in recent years, the Virgin Islands achieved a 52.61% pass rate—an impressive improvement of more than 6% compared to both 2023 and 2024. Importantly, the Virgin Islands’ results once again surpassed the regional average of 38.54%, for the third year in a row.
The Territory also proudly recognizes the achievements of its top-performing students in the June 2025 sitting of the CSEC Examinations:
- Jene Juliet Melody Barnwell – BVI Seventh Day Adventist School – 10 subjects, 8 Grade I passes.
- Nickalah Serrah Tyson – BVI Seventh Day Adventist School – 9 subjects, 8 Grade I passes.
- Keischel Ruth Abad Aquino – St. George’s School – 8 subjects, 8 Grade I passes.
The ranking of students is determined by the Caribbean Examinations Council’s method of counting the total number of Grade I passes obtained by each candidate during one examination sitting.
It is important to note that public secondary school students generally complete their CSEC subjects across the final two years of secondary school, with some sitting some subjects at the end of eleventh grade and then others at the end of twelfth grade. In 2025, over forty (40) eleventh graders sat four or more examinations, while an additional sixty (60) students sat between one and three examinations. By successfully completing examinations at this stage, students gain the opportunity to enter tertiary education earlier, broadening their academic pathways while also earning college credits during their secondary school years. This phased approach not only helps students manage their academic load more effectively but also prepares them to transition seamlessly into higher levels of learning and future opportunities.
Chief Education Officer Mrs. Orlandette R. Crabbe commended the results, stating:
“Our students have once again demonstrated that with perseverance, discipline, and the right support, excellence is within reach. The steady upward trends, particularly in English A and Mathematics, reflect the resilience and determination of both our students and our educators.”
The Ministry extends heartfelt congratulations to all students for their hard work, to parents for their support, and to principals and teachers across the Territory for their dedication to preparing students for success. Special congratulations are extended to the territory’s top performers for 2025.
“These results not only reflect academic achievement but also the strength of our schools and the dedication of teachers who continue to go above and beyond for the future of our children,” said Minister for Education, Youth Affairs and Sports, Hon. Sharie B. de Castro. “We remain committed to building on this momentum as we continue to move Full STEAM Ahead: Future-Focused, Student-Led.”
The Ministry of Education looks forward to working closely with schools, families, and community partners to sustain these positive trends and further improve outcomes in the years to come.
