What is Community Service?

Community service is voluntary work done to benefit your school, community, or the wider Virgin Islands. It helps students develop responsibility, teamwork, and leadership skills while giving back to the community. Through service, students learn the value of civic duty and the impact they can have on improving their surroundings.

How many hours of Community Service must I complete?

What You Need / Requirements

Primary school students are required to complete 30 hours of Community Service; while secondary students are required to complete 80 hours of Community Service. These hours must be recorded on the official National Citizenship Service Log Sheet, which is provided by the Ministry of Education.

How should I complete and submit my Log Sheet?

Body

Every activity completed must be logged separately, and students can record no more than six (6) hours per day for any single activity. Each entry on the log sheet must be signed by the teacher or authorized person supervising the service activity. Once completed, the log should be submitted to your school’s coordinator for verification.

What activities qualify as Community Service?

Body

Approved activities include projects such as environmental clean-ups, assisting at schools or senior homes, participating in youth outreach, charity events, and other approved volunteer initiatives. Students should confirm with their teacher or coordinator to ensure the activity qualifies before participating.

Is there a written assignment for Community Service?

Body

Yes. Each student must submit an essay consisting of three (3) paragraphs and not less than 350 words. The essay should reflect on your experience, what you did, what you learned, and how the service has influenced your understanding of community involvement. For secondary students, this written assignment must provide a summative evaluation and reflection of 400 – 500 words, which includes the following (must be typed):

• Your understanding of community service;
• Some of your favourite service activities;
• How your service activities benefited the community;
• What you learned during your service activities and how the service activities impacted your personal growth.
