Update Name on Driver’s Licence

Table of Contents
You are eligible to apply for a name change on your driver's licence if:
- You have legally changed your name through marriage, court order, or other legal means.
- You are a female who has recently married and wishes to adopt your spouse's surname.
To apply for a name change on your driver’s licence, you must complete the process in person at the Department of Motor Vehicles. Below is a step-by-step breakdown to guide you through:
- Obtain and fill out the official Duplicate Driver’s Licence Application Form.
- Ensure all personal information is accurate and clearly written, especially your previous name and new legal name.
You must present original or certified copies of documents that legally authorize your name change. These may include:
- Marriage Certificate – for name changes resulting from marriage.
- Court Order or Deed Poll Document – for name changes through legal process or personal choice.
- A valid photo ID (e.g., passport, existing driver’s licence) may also be requested for identity verification.
- Go to the Department of Motor Vehicles in Pockwood Pond, Tortola or the Virgin Gorda Branch during official business hours (see below).
- Present your completed form and all supporting documents to the Registration Officer or cashier.
- Pay the $10.00 processing fee at the cashier’s desk.
- Be sure to collect your official receipt, which confirms that your application has been accepted and payment made.
- Your documents will be reviewed by DMV staff to verify eligibility and authenticity.
- If everything is in order, your records will be updated in the DMV system to reflect your new name.
- A new driver’s licence card with your updated legal name will be printed and issued to you during your visit.
- In most cases, this is completed on the same day, unless additional verification is needed.
- Incomplete forms or missing documentation will delay processing. Ensure all materials are submitted correctly.
- If applying on behalf of someone else, you must bring an official authorisation letter and valid ID for both parties.
You must submit the following when applying:
- Completed Duplicate Driver’s Licence Form
- One of the following legal documents:
- Marriage certificate
- Court-issued name change document
The updated driver’s licence is typically issued on the same day the application is submitted and the fee is paid. Times may vary based on volume.
