On World Cancer Day, the community is urged to unite in the fight against cancer. The Ministry of Health and Social Development, alongside the BVI Cancer Society, emphasizes the importance of early detection, timely intervention, and prevention in saving lives. This year marks the launch of the “United by Unique” campaign, focusing on a people-centred approach to cancer care. The campaign prioritizes individual, family, and community perspectives, aligning with the Virgin Islands' values of compassion and support. Preventative measures like maintaining a healthy lifestyle, avoiding tobacco, limiting alcohol, and engaging in physical activity can reduce cancer risk. Regular screenings for breast, colon, prostate, cervical, and skin cancers are essential for early detection. The Virgin Islands is working with PAHO to eliminate cervical cancer through increased HPV vaccination and screenings. Residents are encouraged to support the BVI Cancer Society, prioritize screenings, and make healthier choices to reduce cancer's impact in the Territory.

Good morning. Standing here today, looking at this facility, I am reminded that progress is not always a straight line. Sometimes, it's a long and winding road with more than a few speed bumps along the way. This project we are here to commission today, the Long Swamp Sewerage Pump Station, has been exactly that kind of journey. If you look at the history, it goes back further than many of us realise. As early as 1974, a national sewerage system was on the then government's agenda. That was over 50 years ago. Some of our parents and grandparents were at public meetings talking about this very project when many of us were not yet born.

From rubble to rebirth — that is the story of the Eslyn Henley Richiez Learning Centre. In 2017, the winds roared and the walls fell. Chaos swept across our islands, tearing away not only buildings but, for a time, our sense of normalcy. Yet even in the midst of destruction, there flickered something divine — a determination, a dream, a design for renewal. Out of the chaos came clarity. Out of the ruin came resolve. And today, out of that rubble, rises this rebirth — the new Eslyn Henley Richiez Learning Centre, the proud home of the Grizzlies, and the first purpose-built special education facility of its kind in the entire OECS region.

On June 3, 2025, Minister Sharie B. de Castro provided an update on the Ministry of Education’s strategic efforts, in collaboration with H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC), to expand educational opportunities through partnerships with UK universities and colleges. Responding to U.S. visa uncertainties, the Ministry has prioritized UK options where Virgin Islanders benefit from reduced “home fee” tuition. Key outcomes include a new Memorandum of Understanding with Richmond American University London, allowing HLSCC graduates to enter directly into the third year of a bachelor's programme, and promising discussions with institutions like the University of Westminster, London Metropolitan University, and technical colleges. These partnerships aim to provide more affordable, relevant, and efficient pathways for higher education and workforce development.

Good day, Virgin Islands, On the nineteenth of June, I stood before you to declare water a national critical priority and to share the Government’s commitment to addressing the decades-long challenges in our water system. I acknowledged then, as I do now, the hardships our people and businesses continue to face with unreliable supply, and I said that action and not words would follow.

Ten years ago today, on February 16, 2016, this waterfront area was transformed. On that day, it wasn't just that a pier opened, it was a new chapter for the Virgin Islands. Standing here a decade later, we can see that chapter has been one of progress and prosperity. Now, as we celebrate, I think it's important that we tell the full story, because this facility's history teaches us something valuable about who we are as a people. The vision for a modern cruise pier did not belong to any single government. It was built over time, by leaders who understood that when it comes to building our country, the work must continue regardless of who holds the mantle.
