What is public sector debt?

Body

Public debt is the total amount of money a country's government has borrowed to cover expenses when its spending exceeds its tax revenue, or to finance capital projects.  It includes loans from local banks and other financial organizations, and from financial institutions outside the Territory.

How much is the BVI’s current public sector debt?

As of the end of March 2026, the BVI's current public sector debt was US$164.08 million, comprising US$129.24 million for central government debt and US$34.84 million for guaranteed debt.

It's getting larger. The debt increased by 4.3% from March 2025 to March 2026.

How much of our debt is domestic and foreign?

As of the end of March 2026, 52.0% or $85.28 million of our debt is domestic, while 48.0% or $78.80 million is foreign.

Are we paying more to service our debt?

Body

No, we are paying less. As of the end of March 2026, there was a 5.8% drop in debt servicing from March 2025.

How much fixed-rate debt do we have?

As of the end of March 2026, there was 35.1% of our public sector debt is at a fixed rate.

How much of our debt is maturing in more than ten years?

Body

At the end of March 2026, 49.4% of our public sector debt will be maturing in the long-term, more than ten years.
