The Attorney General's Chambers has launched a succession planning initiative in legislative drafting and is inviting qualified Virgin Islanders and Belongers to express their interest in participating by 30th August.

The initiative is a crucial step in the Government of the Virgin Islands’ broader succession planning strategy and seeks to develop long-term, in-house expertise in legislative drafting for the benefit of the Territory. 

Attorney General, Honourable Dawn J. Smith said legislative drafting plays a fundamental role in national development, and this programme offers qualified legal professionals a valuable opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the effective implementation of public policy.

Honourable Smith said, "This initiative underscores our commitment to building sustainable capacity in legislative drafting. By investing in our local talent, we hope that the Virgin Islands will have the expertise needed to support our legislative and policy development needs for years to come."

Hon. Smith added, “This opportunity is particularly well-suited for individuals who are committed to public service and interested in developing expertise in this highly technical area of law. Persons selected to participate in the programme will be expected to make a long-term commitment to public service.”

Eligibility and Candidate Requirements

To be eligible for consideration, candidates must:

•  Be a Virgin Islander or Belonger

• Be admitted or qualified to be admitted as a legal practitioner in the Virgin Islands

• Demonstrate genuine interest in legislative drafting and public service

• Be willing to commit to a structured professional development process over several years.

Interested candidates should make a comprehensive submission including a current curriculum vitae, a statement of interest (1-2 pages), proof of Citizenship or Belonger status, evidence of legal qualifications, and contact details for two professional references.

The statement of interest should clearly convey the candidate’s motivation, their understanding of the opportunity, and how their professional background aligns with the aims of the initiative.
