Press Release
Organisation:
The Department of Culture is inviting interested persons to register for the first in a series of educational workshops in fungi music scheduled for Wednesday, June 17.
Deputy Director of Culture, Ms. Anne Lennard said the department is excited about the staging of the “Introduction to Fungi Music 101” workshop and is welcoming fungi music lovers, musicians, educators, students and others to attend. “Participants should expect to walk away armed with knowledge about this unique genre of music, which dates back countless generations here in The Virgin Islands and in some countries in the region,” Ms. Lennard said.
Ms. Lennard said some key areas of focus will include: the origin and history of Fungi Music, Virgin Islands Fungi Bands over the years, fundamentals of Fungi Music, as well as a much-anticipated interactive musical session.
Facilitators for this workshop will include educator and musician Mr. Kayron Todman, and Ms. Bernadine Walters Louis of The Virgin Islands Studies Institute.
“This is perhaps one of the most unique workshops the department would have offered in some time, as it speaks to one of the most important sectors of our culture - our indigenous music,” the Deputy Director stated.
Persons interested in attending the free workshop may telephone the department at 468-4408 or email: alennard@gov.vg.
The workshop will be staged at the BVI Finance Conference Room, Cutlass Building in Road Town from 9:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. The event will be sponsored and hosted by the Department of Culture with support from The Virgin Islands Studies Institute, Ms. Bernadine Walters Louis and Mr. Kayron Todman.
