Honourable Kye M. Rymer
Press Release
Release Date: 5 June, 2026

Minister for Communications and Works Honourable Kye M. Rymer is urging Virgin Islanders to renew their hurricane preparedness as the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season begins.

Forecasts point to a potentially active season which began June 1, and the ministry and agencies including the Department of Disaster Management and the Public Works Department are taking proactive measures to protect communities and critical communications infrastructure.

Minister Rymer noted that his ministry is in coordination with partner agencies to ensure continuity of communication systems and infrastructure. He said, “Our teams will ensure that drains and ghuts are cleared, manage vegetation, inspect roads and infrastructure, and strengthen critical communication systems to ensure that accurate and timely information reaches the public.”

The minister added, “We are also working closely with the Department of Disaster Management (DDM), the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC), and local telecom providers to enhance the resilience of our cellular broadcasting network. This collaboration is aimed at ensuring that emergency alerts and critical information can be delivered effectively during adverse weather conditions and other disaster events.”

Honourable Rymer advised residents to take actions to ensure their readiness for the hurricane season, including:  reviewing emergency and evacuation plans, restocking disaster supply kits, securing homes and surroundings, identifying the nearest shelters and evacuation routes, staying informed via official Government communication channels, and checking on elderly and vulnerable neighbours.

“As we enter this hurricane season, let us remain alert, proactive, and united in protecting our families, our communities, and our Virgin Islands. Preparedness is an ongoing commitment, by acting early and staying informed, we strengthen the resilience of our entire Territory,” the minister stated.
