Press Release
Organisation:
The Ministry of Communications and Works has approved and commissioned one-way traffic on Great Harbour Road in the vicinity of Rudy’s Marketplace, heading eastward to Foxy’s Tamarind Bar on Jost Van Dyke.
The change was approved after a letter bearing more than one hundred and sixty (160) signatures from island residents was submitted to the ministry, and subsequently discussed at a meeting attended by Minister for Communications and Works Honourable Kye M. Rymer, Permanent Secretary Mrs Elvia Smith Maduro, Second District Representative Honourable Melvin M. Turnbull, Chief of Infrastructure Mr Duane Fraites, representatives from the Public Works Department and the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force. Local residents and stakeholders were present to outline safety concerns and operational challenges affecting both residents and businesses along the stretch of road.
Honourable Rymer said, “The ministry will ensure that the requests of Jost Van Dyke residents are actioned in a safe and transparent manner. This traffic change will address, if not resolve, the challenges that residents and businesses along that stretch of road currently face.”
The minister added, “There are some roadworks and other civil mitigation projects that the residents raised as well, which the ministry will be following up on and executing in short order. The ministry remains committed to the people of the Virgin Islands, and in this instance to the people of Jost Van Dyke.”
Directional signs are already installed and the one-way traffic arrangement has been introduced. Motorists are asked to adhere to the signage. The ministry anticipates that the new one-way system will deliver the improved traffic flow and safety for residents, and enhance access for emergency and service vehicles. Additional roadworks and civil mitigation projects raised during the meeting will be reviewed and scheduled for action. Further details will be communicated to residents in due course.
