PUBLIC NOTICE: NO GAS CANISTERS IN COMMUNAL BINS
Bulletin
Release Date: 31 August, 2026

The Department of Waste Management wishes to advise the public that gas canisters, gas cylinders, and other potentially explosive or hazardous items must NOT be placed inside communal waste bins.

The improper disposal of these items can result in fires, explosions, serious injury, damage to waste collection vehicles, and endangerment of waste collection personnel and members of the public.

Residents are reminded that communal bins are intended for the disposal of regular household waste only. Gas canisters and other hazardous items must be disposed of through the appropriate disposal arrangements and must never be placed in communal bins or with regular household waste.

This notice follows a recent bin fire caused by the improper disposal of a gas canister, which highlights the serious risks associated with the incorrect disposal of these items.

The Department of Waste Management urges all residents to exercise caution and to ensure that hazardous and potentially explosive items are kept out of the regular waste stream.

The Department sincerely appreciates the public's cooperation in helping to maintain a safe environment for residents, waste collection crews, and the wider community.

Should you have any questions or require further information regarding the proper disposal of gas canisters or other hazardous waste, please contact the Department of Waste Management.
