The Department of Waste Management is celebrating the creativity and commitment of persons who work to enhance public spaces across the Virgin Islands.
The department hosted its Annual Summer Beautification Programme ceremony on August 1 at the Sunday Morning Well where Minister for Health and Social Development, Honourable Vincent Wheatley praised the participants for their contribution to community pride and environmental stewardship.
Minister Wheatley said, “When we take the time to care for and improve our surroundings, we are investing in more than just our environment – we are investing in our people, our culture, and our future. I commend all participants for showing pride in their districts and for setting an example of what it means to take ownership of our shared spaces.”
Acting Director of Waste Management, Mr. Levi Benjamin also praised the participants’ creativity and dedication. He said the projects completed under this year’s programme speak volumes about the passion and determination within the communities.
Mr. Benjamin said, “Whether it was planting, painting, or restoring historic wells, each district brought its own vision to life. I am especially proud of the teamwork, skill, and community spirit displayed.”
This year’s programme saw persons from all districts selecting and transforming key areas within their communities. All participants were presented with certificates of participation and cheques in recognition of their efforts.
District Projects Included:
- Visit to ECO Park and DWM Derelict Site
- Beautification of Great Harbour
- Beautification of Well at Sea Cows Bay
- Beautification of Sunday Morning Well
- Beautification of the surrounding areas of District Office
- Painting of Johnson Ghut sidewalks
- Beautification of several areas throughout Long Look
- Beautification of Hope Hill Well, inclusive of building a bench
- Beautification of roads and Anegada Community Centre
The ceremony was hosted by Waste Management Assistant Mr. Jareem Nibbs who was commended for his outstanding dedication to the programme.
The Department of Waste Management remains committed to fostering community engagement through environmental awareness programmes, and thanks all participants, volunteers, and partners for making the 2025 Summer Beautification Programme a success.
