Customised licence plates are available for private vehicles.
They are not available for:
- motorcycles
- commercial vehicles
- taxis
- livery vehicles

What You Need
You will need:
- a completed application form
- a copy of your current vehicle registration
- your driving licence number
- your current licence plate number
- your current vehicle sticker number
- the make, model and year of your vehicle
- the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
- up to three preferred customised plate choices
- payment of the applicable fee
The current application form also requests the applicant's Social Security Number.

How to Apply
Complete the Application for Customised Licence Plates form and submit it to the Department of Motor Vehicles.
On the form, list up to three preferred choices for your customised licence plate, in order of preference.
You must also submit a copy of your current vehicle registration.
Applications are processed in the order they are received.

Cost
The fees are:
- Personalised licence plate: $1,000
- Professional licence plate: $400
- Transfer of a customised licence plate to another vehicle: $5
Payment may be made at the Department of Motor Vehicles by cash, credit card or cheque.
Cheques should be made payable to the Accountant General.

Choosing your customised licence plate
Your requested plate may contain a combination of letters and numbers.
The plate must:
- contain at least one character
- contain no more than seven characters
- be entered using capital letters
- follow the permitted format for the type of plate requested
Your plate will be produced using the wording approved from your application.
Personalised licence plates
Personalised licence plates may use letters and numbers.
Punctuation marks such as the following are not permitted:
- dash (-)
- number sign (#)
- ampersand (&)
Professional licence plates
A dash (-) may be used on a professional licence plate where applicable.

Approval of plate wording
All customised licence plate requests are subject to approval.
Requests containing offensive language, profanity, socially unacceptable wording or inappropriate abbreviations will be rejected.
A customised licence plate cannot duplicate the format of a regularly issued licence plate, such as DV-100 or PV-20000.
The wording requested for a personalised licence plate is subject to approval by the Minister.
Where the same wording is used on more than one personalised or professional plate, a number may be added to distinguish between the vehicles.

After you apply
The Department of Motor Vehicles will review your application and preferred plate choices.
If your application is approved, your plates will be ordered.
Allow approximately 90 days for delivery.
The Department will contact you when your plates are ready for collection.

Transfer a customised licence plate
If you transfer your customised licence plate to another vehicle, a $5 transfer fee applies.
