Title
Transferring a Vehicle After the Owner's Death
If the registered owner of a vehicle has died, the person legally authorised to act on behalf of the deceased may arrange for the vehicle to be transferred.
If the deceased left a will
The executor or executrix appointed through probate by the Supreme Court can act on behalf of the deceased's estate.
If the deceased did not leave a will
The person granted Letters of Administration by the Supreme Court can act on behalf of the deceased's estate.
Under Regulation 20(4), special provision is also made where there is no legal personal representative in the Territory: the person into whose possession the vehicle lawfully comes may be treated as the registered owner for transfer purposes.
Important: The Licensing Officer must be notified of the registered owner's death within one month of the date of death.
