General Manager of the BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) Dr. Neil Smith said the recently conducted comprehensive armed robbery simulation was a success.

Dr. Smith said the corporation, in a commitment to ensuring the safety and security of its employees, conducted the exercise at its workplace last Friday as part of ongoing efforts to prepare and train team members for a wide range of emergency situations.

The General Manager said, “The safety and well-being of employees is our top priority, and we take proactive measures to prepare for any potential threat. The simulated armed robbery scenario, which was carried out in coordination with local law enforcement, security experts, and the emergency medical technicians, allowed our staff to experience and respond to a high-stress situation in a controlled and safe environment.”

During the simulation, employees were able to practice critical response procedures, including:

• Immediate notification of law enforcement and company security.
• Lockdown and securement of vulnerable areas.
• Evacuation routes and procedures.
• Communication strategies.
• First aid and medical assistance for injured individuals.

Dr. Smith said the exercise was conducted after a weeklong training exercise provided invaluable hands-on experience and allowed employees to familiarise themselves with the protocols that are in place to ensure their safety.

“Our team members’ ability to remain calm and respond appropriately in an emergency is essential, and this simulation was designed to enhance their preparedness,” he said.

Dr. Smith added, “As part of our ongoing commitment to safety and security, we will continue to conduct regular training exercises and drills, ensuring that our team is well-prepared to respond effectively in any emergency situation. Our employees' well-being and peace of mind are of the utmost importance to us.”

The exercise was conducted in partnership with the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force and planning with the Emergency Response team at the Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital. The activity was also observed by the BVI Red Cross through their Disaster Coordinator Ms. Resherma Lyons.

The Management and staff of the BVI Electricity Corporation extend appreciation to the local law enforcement agencies, security consultants, all participants and the community for their support and cooperation during this exercise. Of notable mention is Mr. Devante Maduro and Mr. Gumbs who were unknowing bystanders and who willingly rushed to the rescue of employees who they thought were severely injured.
