The Government of the Virgin Islands is moving ahead with the development of a National Information Communications and Technology (ICT) Policy following the signing of an agreement to improve the sector in August 2017.

To this end, representatives from the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) met last week with stakeholders from the private and public sectors to initiate the process of improving and developing ICT within the Territory.

The CTU team included Project Team Leader, Mr. Nigel Cassimire; Senior ICT Specialist, Ms. Michele Marius; ICT Technical Specialist, Mr. Gary Kalloo and ICT Legal Counsel, Ms. Vashti Maharaj.

Mr. Cassimire said that the purpose of the meetings were to introduce the ICT project, build support, and facilitate feedback from the different stakeholders in drafting of a plan. 

ICT Specialist, Mr. Gary Kalloo said that meeting with stakeholders from different fields of profession will enable the team to identify the key areas to build upon, with attention and focus on connectivity and network infrastructure (physical systems).

ICT Legal Counsel, Ms. Vashti Maharaj said her role entailed understanding the legal framework. She said that the overall mission was to underpin a robust and resilient, national ICT plan and implementation strategy.

The Ministry of Communications and Works remains committed to ensuring the development and maintenance of public infrastructure in keeping with international standards, so that the public utilities are reliable and affordable in support of an enhanced community life, for the residents and visitors of the Virgin Islands.
