The BVI London Office is getting ready for an impactful week as the British Virgin Islands (BVI) prepares to host the highly anticipated 2025 Overseas Territories Youth Summit on 27 February at BVI House in London. Organised by the UK Overseas Territories Association (UKOTA), this event promises to be a dynamic platform for young voices from across the UK's Overseas Territories, all aimed at driving change and nurturing inclusivity.

This year, Miss Malia Choucoutou, the youth representative from the BVI will serve as Chair. She will guide the participants in discussions on issues such as neurodiversity and disability in education, LGBTQ+ rights, immigration, and migration. This is a chance for the youths of the territories to unite, share their perspectives, and influence the future.

“We are pleased that the BVI has been selected to host and chair this important summit," said Tracy Bradshaw, the UK Representative to the Government of the British Virgin Islands and current Chair of UKOTA. "As the BVI currently holds the presidency of UKOTA, we are delighted to provide a vibrant platform for youth from across the territories to come together, exchange ideas, and work towards a more inclusive future."

Participants can look forward to engaging plenary sessions and invaluable networking opportunities. With each inhabited UK Overseas Territory represented by two youth participants and a youth parliament representative, this summit is set to empower the next generation of leaders. This is also an incredible opportunity for the future leaders of the BVI to connect with their peers, amplify their voices, and drive positive change within our communities.

Since its inauguration in 2023, the Overseas Territories Youth Summit has been a cornerstone of UKOTA's commitment to empowering young people and enhancing collaboration among the UK's overseas territories.

In a separate yet equally exciting event, the UK Youth Parliament Sitting will take place on 28 February 2025. This follows the inspiring participation of over 2,900 young people aged 11-18 from across the UK Overseas Territories in the inaugural "Make Your Mark" ballot during UK Parliament Week in December 2024. Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of the House of Commons, praised the turnout as "democracy in action." The winning theme from the ballot, “Education and Learning: school/college and access to university and apprenticeships,” received 661 votes, or 22% of the total, and will be highlighted during a Special Segment at the Youth Parliament Sitting, where representatives from each territory, including Miss Adrianne Thomas from the BVI, will speak at the Despatch Box. Miss Thomas will represent the voices of the youths as she advocates for the issues that matter to them, like education and access to opportunities.

Both events present remarkable opportunities for young people from the BVI and other Overseas Territories to engage in meaningful dialogue and advocacy on issues that directly impact their lives and futures. Do not miss the chance to support and witness the voices of the next generation!
