Friday, 7 October 2016 - 5:36pm

BVI Post is joining in the global celebrations to observe National Postal Week from October 9 to 15 with a week of activities.

The week-long celebrations will begin with a church service on Sunday, October 9, at the Cane Garden Bay Baptist Church at 10:30 a.m. to commemorate World Post Day, which is celebrated annually on October 9.

World Post Day was declared on October 9, 1969 to commemorate the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874 in the Swiss Capital, Berne. It was declared as World Post Day by the UPU Congress held in Tokyo as a means to highlight the importance of the postal services.

The BVI Post will conclude the week’s activities with the BVI Post’s Customer Appreciation Day on Friday, October 14, at the General Post Office in Road Town. During the week, postal facts will be aired on ZBVI Radio for the public’s engagement.

Postmaster General of the BVI Post, Ms. Pascha Stoutt said that the celebrations are aimed to create awareness about the role of the postal and philatelic services in the lives of people and businesses and its contribution to social and economic development in the Territory.

Ms. Stoutt said, “The celebrations, which will conclude on October 14, are also aimed at generating a broader awareness about BVI Post’s role and activities.”

She added, “Even with the threat of increased use of electronic technology, the importance of all postal services and international mail systems cannot be replaced and it is important that we maintain both an inward and outward focus on championing the integration of more sustainable and profitable growth in this competitive global postal environment.”

The BVI POST is a customer service oriented organisation and an integral part of the Territory’s social fabric charged with the responsibility of providing postal services to the Virgin Islands.

The postal service provides certified mail and delivery confirmations that guarantees that the documents or packages have been delivered properly; businesses and individuals to send and receive important notifications, signed contracts, written correspondence, small packages and large deliveries; delivery of products ordered online and through catalogues; and convenience to busy persons to track and confirm shipments to ensure timely arrival.

The public is encouraged to visit the BVI Post offices and become acquainted with its services by participating in the week’s activities.
