The Territory’s men will be encouraged to live more holistic and healthier lifestyles as this month is Men’s Health Month.

Gender Affairs Coordinator, Ms. Lorolie Connor said the observance is fitting since Father’s Day and International Men’s Health Week are observed from June 12 to 18. She said in addition to Men’s Health Week, the office will launch a Men’s Health campaign aimed at reinforcing positive imagery of ordinary men in the British Virgin Islands.

Ms. Connor said, “The intention is to spark conversations about the importance of the male role in families and the communities, as well as to highlight unique health concerns of men and boys to encourage early detection and preventative measures.”

The campaign will be launched on the Government of the Virgin Islands Facebook page and the images will highlight this year’s Men’s Health Week theme of ‘Health Elements’ through sub elements such the physical element; the emotional element; and the spiritual element of men.

Ms. Connor added, “We are hoping that the posters will challenge men to take part in this movement by posting personal photos of them taking care of themselves and their family. We want them to use the hash tag ‘BVI men on the move’ (#BVIMENONTHEMOVE) and by the end of this month we hope to recognise everyone who participated with something special.”

Men’s Health Week activities will begin on June 12 and religious leaders are invited to support the dialogue on the importance of males and their roles in their families and communities.

The Office of Gender Affairs has also partnered with a number of non-governmental organisations and entities such as M.A.L.E and RRD Outreach Ministry to launch the upcoming activities and assist with the Man Cave sessions targeted at male dominated workplaces.

The public is invited to support the men’s sporting events including Oldie Goldie Basketball Games on June 18 featuring CAT5 versus Over 40 West End Team at the Benjamin Romney Park at 4:00 p.m., and on June 25 on Virgin Gorda at the Jeffrey Caines Arena featuring CAT5 and the Over 40 Mystics at 7:00 p.m. In addition, a Rotary family Softball Game featuring will be held in honour of Men’s Health Week on June 15 at the Road Town Softball Field starting at 6:00 p.m.

Persons interested in attending or supporting any of the scheduled events are asked to contact the Office of Gender Affairs at 468-2236 or 468-3415.
