Remarks by Honourable Kye M. Rymer

Minister for Transportation, Works and Utilities
Road Safety Appeal

March 1st 2022

Good day to all Virgin Islanders, Residents and Visitors.

This morning we have received news of another serious motor accident on our roads, in which, sadly, a life was lost. The police are conducting inquiries and we await the official details of the incident.

On behalf of the Government of the Virgin Islands, the Honourable Premier and my own behalf and that of my family, I extend condolences to the loved ones of the victim of this morning’s tragedy and to those who have lost family members and friends recently.

I wish to take this opportunity to once again appeal to all road users to exercise care and consideration when traversing the roads.

Please obey all road laws and regulations, practice road safety, and drive with courtesy and consideration for others.

We must be our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers. While it is true that accidents will occur, every road user must do their part to minimise the incidence of these occurring and the severity of injuries.

Just last week, we saw circulating on social media video footage of persons recklessly speeding through oncoming traffic on the East-bound lane of the James Walter Francis Highway in the vicinity of Pasea.

On a daily basis residents complain of encounters where vehicle operators drive with little to no regard for others, putting lives and property at risk. These are the kinds of things that we can do without and which we must discourage.

As Minister responsible, I fully support the calls for residents and the efforts of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force for increased enforcement of the Territory’s Road Traffic Laws and Regulations, as do my elected colleagues.

I do believe, however, that personal responsibility and consideration should be everyone’s motto.

I thank you.
