The Social Development Department is hosting a “Parents Cooperative Colleagues” seminar that will provide support to parents to strengthen their co-parenting skills while promoting harmonious families within the Territory.

The purpose of the seminar is to secure the Territory’s families by enhancing the skills of parents to co-parent effectively.

Social Worker Mrs. Roxanne Toussaint stated, “This forum also provides an opportunity for parents to increase their capacity to parent together, even though they may not be in an intimate relationship.”

Mrs. Toussaint added, “We contribute to improving the family structure by making seminars, workshops and counseling sessions available in an effort to create a harmonious link between parents.”

She expressed concern with the number of social issues surrounding families which she said may be directly linked to an increase in crime, behavioral problems and the surge in youth offences.

According to the Social Worker, parents stand to gain significantly from participating in the seminar by enhancing their communication skills and building their capacity to establish and maintain a positive relationship as co-parents.

The seminar titled “Parents Cooperative Colleagues” will be held on Wednesday, February 25 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the BVI Red Cross.  Refreshments and child care services will be provided.

The Social Development Department aims to provide the population with effective social services that will empower, promote and enrich their quality of life, while fostering individual independence.
