The public is notified that humpback whales are expected to travel through the Virgin Islands waters in early spring. Persons are reminded to:

  • Stay at least 100 yards away from the whale and put the boat or vessel’s engine in neutral.
  • Never chase a whale in a vessel or boat, as whales are capable of capsizing boats.
  • Avoid swimming with whales as they are unpredictable and may become aggressive if threatened.
  • Allow whales to control the nature and duration of the encounter.

The Conservation and Fisheries Department is asking persons to exercise caution and to contact the department when these marine mammals are spotted. Persons can telephone the department at 468-2700 or post and share pictures on the Facebook page “BVICFD”.
