The Purcell Estate Community Centre will be renamed and dedicated after the late Christiana and Gertrude Warner, in recognition of their contribution to the Purcell Estate community.

Cabinet approved the decision to rename the centre after Christiana Warner and her daughter Gertrude Warner following the suggestion made in 2012 by the Sixth District Representative, Honourable Alvera Maduro Caines.

Honourable Caines while making the proposal for the women to be recognised, said at the time that Gertrude and her mother Christiana provided housing to the less fortunate and had leased and sold land to the majority of the homeowners in Purcell Estate at affordable costs.

The Ministry of Health and Social Development undertook the initiative and invited comments on the proposal from members of the public, in particular residents of the Purcell Estate community via the local media and churches. A survey was also conducted in the Purcell Estate area that obtained direct feedback on the recommendation for the renaming.

The sample included persons who had lived in the area all their lives and persons who had moved to the neighbourhood. Forty-five persons completed the survey that included 28 females and 17 males ranging from ages 23 to 92 years. The results revealed 100 percent of persons were in full agreement with the naming of the community centre in honour of Gertrude and Christiana Warner.

The re-naming and dedication ceremony is slated to begin on Friday July 10, at 10:30 a.m. The ministry extends gratitude to the residents of the Purcell Estate community for the participation in receiving feedback that assisted in the decision-making process.

The Ministry of Health and Social Development aspires to provide a caring and integrated system of health and social services that facilitates human development and improves the quality of life in the Virgin Islands.
