Press Release

Archives and Records Management
Release Date:
Tuesday, 25 April 2017 - 10:37am

The Archives and Records Management Unit of the Office of the Deputy Governor is calling on all residents to protect all physical and electronic records, when the Territory observes Records May Day, on Monday, May 1.

Records May Day is an annual observance held on May 1 in the United States, the Caribbean and other parts of the world where concerned persons and organisations promote preventative security of physical and electronic records against natural and man-made disasters.

Beginning today, the Archives and Records Management Unit will issue daily tips to public officers providing guidance and direction on good records management.  An information poster titled, “Year Round Records Management Tips:  Working Towards Enduring Records Preservation” is also available for public use on www.bvi.gov.vg.

Chief Records Management Officer in the Archives and Records Management Unit, Mr. Christopher Varlack said there is a strong need for everyone to have on-going management guidance as it pertains to records.

“Disasters can either be natural or man-made so what we try to do, at the Archives and Records Management Unit, is to highlight both and let people know that they can take preventive measures to help mitigate in the event of a disaster,” he said.

Across the Territory persons are encouraged to engage in meaningful activities throughout May to increase records management awareness in their homes and workplaces.

The public is invited to tune in to ZBVI Radio’s morning almanac on Thursday, April 27; Friday, April 28; and Monday, May 1 for tips on good records keeping practices.

The Chief Records Management Officer was also a guest on ‘The Vigilate Dialogues’, where he shared more information about good records management practices. The pre-recorded show will air at various times next week on CBN Channel 51.

The observance of Records May Day in the Territory is led by the Archives and Records Management Unit, while the concept of records security is strongly supported by the Department of Disaster Management (DDM), the Territory’s lead coordinating agency for disaster response.
