Response teams across the Virgin Islands have been commended for their efforts in mitigating the impact of Tropical Storm Ernesto.

Minister for Works, Honourable Kye M. Rymer commended the teams and acknowledged that there is more work to be done to better prepare the Territory for future storms.

Honourable Rymer said, "We are immensely grateful to God for his protection so far in this hurricane season. We see that despite our tireless efforts, there is work to be done in better preparing ourselves, prior to any storms, as well as in our recovery efforts, though challenging."

The minister stated that is a relentless task to safeguard communities and ensure that the necessary means are available post storms in restoring normalcy to affected areas. He also urged residents to always be in a state of readiness as the Territory enters the peak of the hurricane season.

Honourable Rymer said, "These are most notably the times the Virgin Islands family stand together in solidarity. I employ all residents to use Tropical Storm Ernesto as an opportunity to assess what preparations and maintenance is needed to ensure the safety of yourself and family, as we remain vigilant for the remainder of the 2024 hurricane season."

The following organisations and departments were recognised by the ministry for their contributions:

  • The Department of Disaster Management for their proactive coordination and deployment of resources
  • The Virgin Islands Fire and Rescue Service for remaining vigilant
  • The Public Works Department for their preparations before and during the storm, and the supporting district heavy equipment operators

  • The BVI Electricity Corporation for their efforts in restoring electricity throughout the territory despite unforeseen challenges
  • The countless volunteers and community organizations who selflessly continue to provide aid and support to those impacted by the storm.

The Ministry of Communications and Works remains dedicated to ensuring the continued development and maintenance of public infrastructure in keeping with international standards so that public utilities are reliable and affordable in support of an enhanced community life for every resident and visitor in the Virgin Islands.
