Some three thousand students will be returning to a full day of school at the beginning of the advent term in September.

Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth Affairs, Fisheries and Agriculture, Dr. Marcia Potter said that there has been major renovations and rebuilding over the last two years on the Enis Adams Primary School, Bregado Flax Educational Centre- Secondary (Building One) and more recently the ‘L’ Shaped Building on the Elmore Stoutt High School campus.

“I am pleased to announce that all three sites will be ready for the start of school in a few weeks.  Dedication and handing over ceremonies will be held at each site within the coming weeks,” Dr. Potter said.

Dr. Potter added, “For the remainder of 2019, infrastructural works will continue.  Discussions and final decisions will take place on the feasibility of a junior secondary school at the Isabella Morris primary location and one on the eastern end of Tortola.”

Dates for the Handover Ceremonies are as follows:

  • Building I of the Bregado Flax Educational Centre - Friday, August 30 at 2:30 p.m.
  • L-shaped Building of the Elmore Stoutt High School - Friday, September 6

Numerous public schools were damaged during the passage of the hurricanes in 2017 which resulted in changes being made to the public schools’ operations.

A shift system (half day) was instated for students of the Elmore Stoutt High School to accommodate students without classrooms. In the primary school system, students from the Althea Scatliffe Primary School, Enid Scatliffe Pre-Primary School, Enis Adams Primary School and Eslyn Henley Richiez Learning Centre in Road Town were housed at the Althea Scatliffe Primary School.

The Seventh Day Adventist Youth Centre in Carrot Bay housed students from the western end of the island inclusive of the Leonora Delville Primary, Isabella Morris Primary and Ivan Dawson Primary.

Designs for remaining damaged schools will continue as the ministry seeks to provide the best learning environment for students across the Territory.
