The staff and residents of the Safe Haven Transitional Centre observed World Mental Health Day by hosting recovery activities. Manager, Mrs. Jacqueline Donovan said the driving theme for the occasion was ‘Hope with mental illness’ which means that with hope through treatment and recovery; persons with mental illness can overcome their challenges to lead as normal lives as possible. The Rotaract Club of Virgin Gorda collaborated with the staff of the centre, participating in activities such as dominoes and poetry. The day’s activities were led by Mr. Trevor Bridgewater Jr of the Rotaract Club of Virgin Gorda, who rendered a poem depicting the need to have the community join together and advocate for persons who are mentally ill. Green balloons which symbolised hope were released to culminate the event. World Mental Health Day is observed internationally on October 10 every year with the objective to raise awareness and mobilise support for mental health issues. Persons interested in making donations for recovery events and activities can contact the Centre at 468-5815 or 468-5820. (Photo Credit: Ronnielle Frazer/GIS)
