Students and families throughout the Territory are invited to participate in the WE RECYCLE Student Competition from December 1 to 30.

Minister for Health and Social Development, Honourable Carvin Malone, while speaking on the purpose of the competition said that it is designed to promote recycling in the villages throughout the Territory.

“I want to encourage everyone to register their children and for families as a whole to be a part of the collection effort. The overarching goal is to reduce the volume of waste at our incinerator and landfill. It is recognised that the progress is only sustainable if the Generation NEXT is involved from the onset.”

Department of Waste Management Manager, Mr. Neville Allen, revealed that recycling has already started to take place on a regular basis throughout the Territory but that the hope is that the competition will get more persons to find the time and space to get started with recycling in their homes. 

Deputy Director of Green VI (non-profit) Sarah Penney said that she was pleased that the organisation could continue its long-standing collaboration with the Government of the Virgin Islands by supporting the logistics of the competition.

“I am so excited that we have another opportunity to work together to get more people to reduce, reuse and recycle. I hope participation is high and that we all continue to recycle long after the competition is over,” Ms. Penney said.

Students on all islands can participate by doing the following:

1. Registering online at www.greenvi.org and reading the guidelines.
2. Collecting, rinsing and separating their family’s glass, plastic and aluminium 
3. Bringing the recyclables to your island-specific drop-off centre to be weighed and processed 
4. Calling or messaging 443-3354 with any questions

Students are encouraged to also invite their family or community members to recycle on their behalf.

The WE RECYCLE Student Competition is sponsored by the Ministry of Health and Social Development, the Department of Waste Management and local non-profit, Green VI.
