Director of the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI-SRC), Dr. Richard Robertson has sought to allay fears of an imminent tsunami threat following the increased seismic activity recorded at the submarine volcano Kick ’em Jenny.

The Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) Ship LYME BAY will pay a three-day visit to the Virgin Islands beginning on Sunday, July 26.

The alert level for the submarine volcano, Kick ‘em Jenny which lies between Grenada and its sister island of Carriacou has been raised to orange which indicates that there is a highly elevated level of seismic and/or fumarolic activity or other unusual activity. 

A drought watch remains in effect for the British Virgin Islands given the significant reduction in rainfall recorded for the first half of this year.

The Department of Disaster Management (DDM) is doing its part to contribute to academic development through the provision of internship opportunities.

Premier Dr. the Honourable D. Orlando Smith, OBE has lauded the recent international accreditation conferred upon the National Disaster Management Programme (NDMP) as “an outstanding achievement and one we must celebrate and be very proud of.”

The annual meeting of the National Disaster Management Council (NDMC) took on added significance this year with the signing of Memoranda of Understandings (MOUs) with the British Virgin Islands Airports Authority (BVIAA) and the Insurance Association of the British Virgin Islands (IABVI).

Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr. the Honourable D. Orlando Smith, OBE is extending congratulations to the Department of Disaster Management for leading the BVI on the journey to become the first Territory in the Caribbean to be granted international accreditation from the Emergency Management Accreditation Programme (EMAP). 

The British Virgin Islands has become the first territory outside of the United States and Canada to be granted international accreditation for its disaster management programme.
