Sections of the original concrete wall around A. O. Shirley Recreational Ground failed during the 2017 hurricane, with some areas sustaining damage and some failing completely. This has left large gaps in the perimeter of the grounds.

Issue
The Virgin Islands Recovery and Development Agency (RDA) – a statutory Agency established by the Government of the Virgin Islands with the purpose of ensuring the timely and proper implementation and execution of the Recovery to Development Plan of the Virgin Islands; is diligently making arrangements for the safe removal and disposal of approximately 200 (subject to change) derelict vessels which remain stranded along the coastlines and bays of the British Virgin Islands following the passage of hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017.

This handover ceremony this morning marks the fourth school building that we are able to open from among the buildings that were deemed unusable after the 2017 disaster.  Immediately following the 2017 disasters, we assessed all school buildings and classified them as usable or unusable. Using that information, we were able to make several appeals for assistance from the business community, private donors and other organisations. We have benefitted greatly as a ministry from the public-private partnership that we share with the business community and today is yet another example of the benefits of this initiative.
