The Ministry of Health and Social Development has announced that the re-implementation of the derelict disposal fee will commence September 1.

This one-time disposal fee is based on vehicle weight and will be used to offset costs and support the ongoing removal and processing operations of derelict vehicles within the Territory.  Vehicle owners are expected to pay the fee at the time of renewing their vehicle license. The categories for each fee are as follows:

  • Category A (1500-3000 lbs): $60
  • Category B (3000-6000 lbs): $85
  • Category C (Over 6,000 lbs): $125

According to Minister of Health and Social Development Honourable Vincent Wheatley, the reimplementation of the Derelict Vehicle Disposal Fee is a necessary step toward building a cleaner and healthier Virgin Islands.

Honourable Wheatley said, “This initiative not only supports the cost of removing and disposing of abandoned vehicles, but also helps protect our environment, enhance our tourism image, and promote greater accountability among vehicle owners. The reimplementation of the fee reflects a commitment to public health, environmental integrity, and territorial aesthetics.”

Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Ms. Tasha Bertie stated that every derelict vehicle left unattended is a burden on communities and the environment.

Ms. Bertie added, “By reinstating the disposal fee, we are reinforcing the principle that everyone has a role to play in keeping the Virgin Islands clean, safe and beautiful.”

A re-Implementation educational campaign will be launched and will feature media announcements and educational materials to ensure the public is informed about the initiative.

The Department of Waste Management is committed to ensuring that the natural beauty of the Territory is enhanced by utilising state of the art waste management technology to ensure timely collection disposal, and where possible, the recycling of waste.
