Public and private schools across the Territory will engage in activities aimed at encouraging students to develop a love for reading when the Territory observe Reading is Fun Week 2024.
Education Officer with the responsibility for English, Mrs. Janice George-Harris says the week will be observed from October 7 to 11 under the theme, “Reading Transforms You”.
Mrs. George-Harris said, “The public is also invited to find time to read and share excerpts from books with other people during the week. A community that reads is a community that is progressive. Reading transforms you. Book donations can be made to schools and the public library. Let’s read, BVI read.”
Other notable activities to be held during the week include the Bulletin Board and news clips read by students on 284 Media and ZBVI. Members of the public including students will read short excerpts from books and poems on the Government of the Virgin Islands website, ZBVI, ZCCR radio stations and 284 Media. The East End, Long Look Community Library will also host readings of selected schools and E-Book presentations on Wednesday October 9 and 10 from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.
The public is invited to view and interact with the series of videos that will be posted on the Government of the Virgin Islands’ Facebook page at BVIGovernment. The videos to be posted includes a series titled “Book Talks” that will be hosted by April Glasgow. Poets and authors will share excerpts of their work with Ms Glasgow.
Students and adults will introduce books in another series of videos and read excerpts explaining how the books transformed the way that they critically think in real life situations.
The Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports continues to provide high quality educational services, as well as facilitate access to and participation in sports and recreation, in order to enrich the lives of all residents of these Virgin Islands.
